Louisiana has its State Capitol in the picturesque city
of Baton Rouge. Louisiana, which is popularly called the
"Creole State," has an area of 48,720 square miles, and was
admitted to the Union in 1812. The magnolia is the State
flower. The name Louisiana was bestowed by the
explorer La Salle in 1682, in honour of Louis XIV. of
France.
