SOLDIERS MONUMENT AND COMMON. In the center
of the Common or Public Square at Waltham, is the Soldiers
Monument. It is 42 feet high, between 8 and 9 feet at the
base, and is built of granite. On May 7th, 1866, the city
appropriated £6,000.00 for its erection, but the total cost
amounted to $7096.00. The Monument bears the inscription
"To the Nation's Defenders".
