Fortress Monroe is the largest and finest stronghold
and the chief artillery station of the U.S. Government. It
was begun in 1819, and is an imposing example of massive
defence. It is built of stone and surrounded by a wide
moat, with casemated and barbette guns, also a water
battery. Within are the barracks and officers' homes,
embowered in shade, presenting a charming and pic-
turesque village of military beauty.
