LANDING DRILL. In the landing drill, a detachment
of twenty or more cadets, strung out along a rope after the
fashion of a volunteer fire company, drag ashore from their
ship a one-pounder gun, and after reaching a vantage point,
train it upon an imaginary enemy. Each member has a
carbine slung at his back and they thus form a squad of in-
fantry qualified to support the artillery in case of an attack.
