No 81. U.S. S. "TEXAS." Battleship of the
second class. Launched at Norfolk, Virginia, June 28,
1892; length 308 feet 10 inches; breadth 64 feet 1 inch;
draught 22 feet 6inches; displacement 6,700 tons; speed
17.80 knots; 30 guns, 30 officers and 478 men. Under
command of Capt. John W. Phillips, the Texas took
prominent part in the Battle of Santiago, which resulted
in the destruction of the Spanish fleet. This view shows
her saluting in New York Harbor as she left for the war.
