Newport News (originally called Port Nuce and later
Newport Nuce) is situated at the mouth of the James
River, where it empties into Hampton Roads. During/14
Civil War it was a vast military camp, and here, on
March 9th, 1862, occurred the famous fight between the
Monitor" and the "Merrimac." The largest sea-going
ships and war vessels are built and launched here.
