Newport News (originally called Port Nuce and later Newport Nuce) is situated at the mouth of the James River, where it empties into Hampton Roads. During the Civil War it was a vast military camp, and here on March 9th, 1862, occurred the famous fight between the "Monitor" and the "Merrimac." The largest sea-going ships and war vessels are built and launched here
