H.M.S. "New Zealand." This Battle Cruiser, which
was presented to the British Navy by the people
of New Zealand, is 555 ft. long, 80 ft. wide, 26 ft.
draught, 18,800 tons, 44,000 S.H.P. (turbine);
speed, 25 knots; complement, 789. Built at
Glasgow; commissioned, 1912; armament, 24 guns,
4-in. and over, 10 smaller guns, and 2 torpedo
tubes. The New Zealand, with the vessels of the
First Battle Cruiser Squadron, took part in the
successful action fought on August 28th, 1914, in
the Heligoland Bight, against the Destroyers and
Cruisers guarding the approaches to the German
coast.
