FACTS CONCERNING MOTHER'S DAY
On May 10, 1908, a Mother's Day service was held in this
church at the request of the founder, Miss Anna Jarvis.
Mr. L. L. Loar, the Sunday School Superintendent, ar-
ranged the program, and it was celebrated in memory of
Mrs. Anna Reeves Jarvis, the honored mother, who served
as a teacher in the Primary department for over twenty
years.
On this same date, in the Church service which followed,
the pastor, Rev. Mr. Harry C. Howard, D. D., preached the
Mother's Day sermon.
It was at the General Conference, which convened at
Minneapolis, Minnesota, in July 1912, that Judge Robinson,
a delegate from this Church, introduced a resolution_rec-
ognizing Miss Anna Jarvis as the founder of Mother's Day,
and the second Sunday of May as Mother's Day in the
Church.
Later in 1914 Congress authorized the President to desig-
nate the second Sunday of each May as Mother's Day, and
since then it has spread to all corners of the earth.
