Belle Isle Park contains about 700
acres and has cost Detroit including bridge
leading to it about $2,000,000. It has beautiful
lawns and Floral displays, also many miles
of driveways and canals. It has a Zoo,
Horticultural Building and Aquarium. Re-
freshments are served at both Casino and
Pavillion. It was bought from the Chippewa
and Ottawa Indians for eight Barrels of rum,
three rolls of tobacco, six pounds of vermil-
lion and a belt of wampun, by Lieutenant
Mc Dougall in 1769. In 1879. 110 years after-
ward it was sold to Detroit for $200,000.
