Reading, P., the County, Seat of Berks County,
was founded by Thomas and Richard Pann, sons of
Wm. Pann, in 1748, who named it for Reading, Eng-
land, their former home. The region was among the
first in America to produce iron and kept its suprem-
acy in this line for over a century. Industrially Read-
ing ranks third in Pennsylvania and is noted for the
manufacture of hosiery and builders' hardware.
