KINGSTON grew out of the disaster of the 1692
earthquake which destroyed the first trading city of Port
Royal. Situated on the seventh largest natural harbour in
the world, it became the capital city in 1870 succeeding
Spanish Town. The sprawling city, cooled by the trade
winds blowing inland, has King Street as its main
shopping area and the White Public Buildings dominate
the cluster of stores and numerous shoppers.
