1602-Cape discovered by Bartholomew Gosnold.
1620-Arrival of the Pilgrims.
1627-Miles Standish trading at Manomett with the
Dutch from New Amsterdam. Boats within
three miles of each other. Small canal talked of.
1697-General Court of Massachusetts appoints a
committee to view place for passage from Barn-
stable Bay to Manomett Bay.
1717-Capt. Cyprian Southack describes free water
connection across the Cape Colony of Mass.
1776-Gen. Washington ordered Thomas Machin to
survey route which would "give greater security
to navigation and against the enemy." Also
James Bowdoin and William Sever appointed
a committee to investigate subject.
1791-John Hills and James Winthrop make survey.
1812-Isthmus used by small boats to avoid enemy,
1818-Israel Thorndike and Thomas H. Perkins em-
ployed Laommi Baldwin to make survey.
1824-United States ordered survey.
1828-Government Board reports on canal 36 feet
wide and 8 feet deep to cost $669,522.
1860-Renewed interest by State and Government.
1880 Charter granted to Cape Cod Canal Co. H.
M. Whitney and others interested.
1882-Gen. G. K. Warren, U. S. A. Engrs., reports
to Government on canal and cost of approaches.
1883-Cape Cod Ship Canal Co. made contract with
F. A. Lockwood. Excavated over 1,000,000 yds.
and failed. C. M. Thompson, Engineer.
1890-Property assigned to Col. Thos. L. Livermore.
1898-DeWitt C. Flanagan, of N. Y., interested.
1899-June 1-Charter to the Boston, Cape Cod &
N. Y. Canal Co., under which and its amend-
ments present company acting,
1904-August Belmont and others interested
1907-May 8-Approved by the Commissioners.
1909-June 22-Work officially begun at Bourndale.
