THE LONQFELLOW MANSION. The early
home of America's greatest poet. It stands upon the main
thoroughfare of the city, in the midst of its greatest activities.
This was the first brick house in Portland, erected by the
poet's grandfather, General Peleg Wadsworth of Revolution-
ary fame, 1785-86. Owned and preserved by the Longfellow
Historical Society, it is filled with interesting mementoes of
the poet and is open to visitors. 163.
