U. S. SUBMARINES AWAITING ORDERS

PUBLISHED BY AMERICAN COLORTYPE CO., CHICAGO
NO. 9.
The first really successful submarine was built
by an American, and today the best submarines
in the world are built right here in our own
country. These modern undersea craft are about
200 feet in length, have a beam of 1812 feet
and a displacement of 700 tons. There is a
periscope at either end, and a conning tower
in the middle. Below is the engine room with
all the electrical contrivances necessary for the
successful operation of the boat and the safety
of the crew. Just ahead of the engine room
are quarters for the men, and after that a
cabin for the two officers. After that comes the
torpedo room containing eight of these deadly
messengers-four reserves in the racks, and
four in the tubes, ready to be released for their
fatal work merely by the pressure of a button.
