The Wisconsin State Capitol is located in the city of
Madison. The State, which is popularly known as the
"Badger State," has an area of 56,040 square miles, and
was admitted to the Union in 1848. Wisconsin was so
named in 1838 from the river of the same name, the Indian
word being generally interpreted as "westward flowing."
