The Missouri State Capitol is advantageously located
in Jefferson City. The State has an area of 69,415 square
miles, and was admitted to the Union in 1821. The golden
rod is the floral emblem of the State. Missouri derived its
name in 1821 from its principal river, the word, in the Sioux
language, meaning "muddy water."
