THE SEPARATISTS OF ZOAR came to Ohio in
1817. Early log cabins gave place to more preten-
tious dwellings as the community prospered. Joseph
Bimeler, leader of the group, lived in the No. 1
House, built in 1835. The residence has been par-
tially restored and is open to the public. Zoar Vil-
lage State Memorial, Tuscarawas County, is admin-
istered by the Ohio State Archaeological and Histor-
ical Society, Columbus.
