Additional Details:
Montgomery County was established 1796, named in honor of colonel John Montgomery, who explored the Cumberland River country in 1777. He participated in the punitive expedition against "Dragging Canoe", 1779 and accompanied John Donelson on his river voyage to Nashboro (now Nashville). He was signer of the Cumberland Compact, first Sheriff of the district and founder of Clarksville. He commanded territorial troops in the Nickajack expedition in 1794, and was killed by Indians later the same year.
