Back:
Montgomery County was established 1796,
named in honor of Colonel John Montgomery,
who explored the Cumberland River country
in 1777. He participated in the punitive ex-
pedition against "Dragging Canoe", 1779 and
accompanied John Donelson on his river voy-
age to Nashboro (now Nashville). He was
signer of the Cumberland Compact, first
Sheriff of the district and founder of Clarks-
ville. He commanded territorial troops in the
Nickajack expedition in 1794, and was killed
by Indians later the same year.
