Erected by popular subscription at a
cost of over $2,000 largely through the
efforts of the late H. G. Root. Modeled
from a living animal in Central Park,
New York,
45 feet East of this spot was located
the Catamount Tavern so named from a
stuffed Vermont catamount standing on
the sign board of the inn. facing West
and "grinning defiance to the State of
New York”.
This catamount was shot in Bennington
and was the largest of its species.
