Dryobates major anglicus (Hart.
smart bird is a complete contrast to the
Green Woodpecker in appearance; it is
interesting to watch as it creeps up the
trunk of a tree tapping the bark and
removing insects from the crevices. It
usually haunts woods and parks and fre-
quently visits trees in gardens. The nest,
a hole in a tree, is usually tunnelled in
decayed wood. The eggs are creamy-white
