The Mallard.- "Anas platyrhyncha."
Best known of the wild ducks. To be seen
in large numbers in winter when it goes
to the river estuaries. In June the drake
goes into what is called the "Eclipse" or
Female" plumage, changing back about
October. It nests in bents or reeds and 8
to 14 pale green or olive white eggs are
laid. Length, 23".
