Additional Details:
The present building occupies the site of the Old Exchange Hotel which was intimately associated with the Old South. Montgomery was the Capital of the Confederacy and the Exchange Hotel was headquarters for the leaders in the Confederacy's activities. Jefferson Davis was one of the hotel's constant guests. From its portico, Yancey introduced President Davis with the words: "The man and the hour have met." Many Confederate Cabinet meetings were held within its walls; from one of these meetings went the order to fire on Fort Sumter
