In September, 1776, when Washington desired to get information concerning the British designs Capt.. Nathan Hale volunteering to enter the enemy's lines. Disguised as a schoolteacher - his own profession - he went by way of Connecticut, the sound and Long Island to New York, where he was discovered and hanged September 21, 1776, regretting that he had but one life to give for his country.
