DORIS PIKE WHITE AUDITORIUM - GYMNASIUM, KATE DUNCAN
SMITH D. A. R. SCHOOL, GRANT, ALABAMA. The largest project
ever undertaken at the Kate Duncan Smith D. A. R. School was
the Doris Pike White Auditorium-Gymnasium, named in honor of
Mrs. Ashmead White, President General, N. S. D. A. R., 1959-62.
This beautiful and functional structure was begun on October 24, 1960,
completed the following summer, and dedicated by historical coinci-
dence on October 24, 1961, by a very proud President General who
called it "more beautiful than my fondest expectation"-this was
an ALL STATES project costing approximately $128,000. The modern
building of buff brick and beautiful native stone has 30 dome lights
that provide ample light even on cloudy days. It has a regulation-size
basketball court, ample space for physical education activities, a
large, attractive stage, and a basketball seating capacity of approxi-
mately 1300.
