CRAWFORD HOUSE AND SACO LAKE FROM THE NOTCH.
Elephant's Head guards the upper gateway of the Crawford
Notch, and immediately beyoud is the idyllic little plateau
which holds the Crawford House. About 1850, Thomas
Crawford started to build a hotel on the site of the present
Crawford House, but was obliged to sell out to a company,
which completed the house. In April, 1859, the hotel was
burned, and was rebuilt the same year on a somewhat larger
scale. Just at the door of the famous hostelry lies a dainty
gem of a lake which is the true source of the Saco River.
