The Union Jack is the national flag of Great
Britain and Ireland, and dates from the Union of
1801. It consists of three crosses that of St.
George for England, the Saltire of St. Andrew for
Scotland, and the cross of St. Patrick for Ireland.
The word "Jack" is derived from Jaque, a sur-
coat emblazoned with St. George's Cross, not, as
is generally supposed, from "Jacque," the signa-
ture of James I; that monarch, however, added
the cross of St. Andrew to that of St. George.
