Upnor Castle is situated close to Rochester on the
banks of the Medway, for the defence of which river it
was erected in the sixteenth century. It was instrumental
in the repulse of the Dutch in the invasion of the Kentish
coast in the year 1667, but of late years has been utilized
as a storehouse for Government supplies.
