Piccadilly Circus is formed by the intersecting of the,
two fashionable thoroughfares of Regent Street and
Piccadilly. Many other streets also converge
point, and handsome shops, theatres, restaurants,
public buildings render this a very fine Circus. The bronze
fountain and statue of Mercury in the middle was unveiled
in 1893, in memory of Lord Shaftesbury, the philanthropist.
Alfred Gilbert, A.R.A., was the designer.
