Adderley Street. The view depicted shows the prin-
cipal thoroughfare of Cape Town. The building in the
right hand corner of the picture is the Dutch Reformed
Church, and the handsome edifices on either side of the
streef mark the progress South Africa has made. Its
former name was "Heerengracht '-"Gentleman's Canal"
-so given on account of the stream of water which flowed
its whole length, emptying itself into the sea. It was re-
christened after the late Lord Norton, whose family name
of Adderley it now bears.
