The State Capitol of Alabama is located in the city
of Montgomery. Alabama was at one time a part of
Georgia and later was embraced in the territory of
Mississippi. It was admitted to statehood in 1819, and has
an area of 52,250 square miles. The State flower is the
golden rod. Alabama (the word is of Indian derivation) was
named in 1817 from its principal river.
