tier, dear to all American hearts and particularly to those of
New England, whose scenery and folk-lore he portrayed so
faithfully in undying verse. A charming spot, on a little rise
of ground, in the midst of a picturesque grove of trees. An
ideal home for a poet. Here Whittier passed each winter sea-
