THE CLERMONT. Fulton's Steamboat. Length,
150 feet; width, 13 feet; draught of water, 2 feet.
Launched in the spring of 1807 from the shipyards
of Charles Brown on the East River. Left New
York at one o'clock August 17th, 1807, arrived at
Clermont Manor (110 miles) August 18th, at one
o'clock. Left Clermont Manor at 9 A.M. August
19th, arrived at Albany at 5 P.M. With torrents
of smoke and flame pouring from her smokestack,
and gruesome noises from her crude engines, she
was an awesome object to early New Yorkers. A
countryman described her as "The devil on his way
to Albany in a sawmill."
