FULTON'S FIRST EXPERIMENT. In the
summer of 1779 Robert Fulton evinced extraor-
dinary fondness for inventions. Frequently accom-
panying a certain Mr. Gumpf on fishing excursions
on the Conestoga, he became tired of pushing the
boat about with a pole. This led his mechanical
genius to devise a set of paddles, which he operated
by hand. The device was a success and so pleased
the young inventor that he hid the paddles in the
bushes for safety.
