In 1848 this was a Sonorian camp settled by miners from Sonora, Mexico. By 1849 the streets were packed with 5,000 men from all parts of the world. The first newspaper was the Sonora Herald started on July 4, 1850. In June of 1850 the new local government placed a $20 tax on foreign-born miners. Fearing trouble the miners left and went to what is now Columbia where they found richer diggings. Sonora was the western point for the Bodie stage line that went over the Sonora Pass. The first to use this pass was the Bidwell-Bartleson Party who crossed in 1841. A number of early parties became lost in the canyons, mountains and along the rivers of the western side of the Sierras
