ST. JAMES EPISCOPAL CHURCH, Sonora, California.
Built by public__subscription, in 1859, this is said to
be the oldest Episcopal church in the state. A dark
red, sturdy frame structure, it stands on the crest
of a low hill at the north end of the town's main
business street and was built after the camp had
attained a decided air of permanence. It has
survived several major fires that plagued the com-
munity in its early days. It is still in remarkably
good condition and entirely serviceable. . . . R. D.
