This solitary animal lives in the dense bam-
boo forests at an elevation of from 4,000 to
9,000 feet. It feeds solely on bamboo shoots
in the wild, and a mature Giant Panda is said
to have its own bamboo hunting area of sev-
eral square miles. Its paws are specialized to
handle the stalks, and its teeth to grind them.
Despite its appearance, it is more closely
related to the raccoons than to the bears.
The Giant Panda is one of the rarest ani-
mals in captivity. The first living specimen
was brought out of China in 1936. On arrival,
June, 1939, this adult panda weighed 240 lbs.
and was 342 years old. Name: Happy.
