Gilbert Walker, one of the triumvirate, was my Gt Uncle , one of eleven children living in a thatched cottage in the small Highland village of Killin, he could be said to have lived the American dream.
Having worked for some time in a Glasgow department store he set out for Chicago where working in a store he met up with Fowler and Dick and they determined to go into business together. Gilbert was sent out to select a likely place to “ set up shop” and in a letter home tells of covering some eight hundred miles by coach before settling on Wilkes Barre
The rest as they say is history and following the demise of Fowler and Dick he was for a time president of a not insubstantial empire
