This trowel was first used by Washington in laying the corner stone of the National Capitol on September 18, 1793. Also it was used for the laying of the corner stone of the Smithsonian Institution in 1846; of the Washington Monument on July 4, 1848; the Masonic Temple in Washington in 1907; and of the George Washington National Masonic Memorial at Alexandria, Va., on November 1, 1923, by Charles H. Callahan, hen Acting Grand Master and later Grand Master of Virginia.
