119-SNAKE ALTAR, HOPI INDIANS,
WALPI, ARIZONA
Situated high upon the Mesa, 512 ft. above
the surrounding valley, this rock is the site of
the world famous Hopi Indian Snake Dance,
held here every other year in August. The
membership in the Snake Clan is inherited
thru the mother. The "Kisi" or Snake House,
in which the snakes are kept during the
ceremony is built of Cottonwood boughs be- 3
eside this Altar.
