SUBMARINE TENDER USS HOWARD W. GILMORE (AS-16) U. S. Naval Base Charleston, S. C. The USS Howard W. Gilmore provides facilities and support for submarines in overseas areas. The vessel acts as a combination ammunition depot, supply center, shipyard, and motel to her brood of submarines. At the same pier are the submarines CLAMAGORE (SS-343) and DARTER (SS-576).
