Back:
PIONEERS IN THE OIL INDUSTRY
• When in 1859 near Titusville, Pa. Colonel Edwin L. Drake
discovered oil, Hiram J. Harris and his brothers joined the
rush of settlers to the new field.
in succeeding years, the brothers operated The Harris Oil
Co.: The Shoe and Leather Petroleum Co., and The Foster Farm
Oil Co., whose wells at Pioneer Run, Pa., not far from the origi-
nal Drake Well, are shown in the picture. Two of the Harris
brothers are wearing white silk hats. In the early oil fields, it
was customary for the owners to wear silk hats. Yet, in con-
trast, crudely constructed offices for extensive operations were
a typical sight.
• Hiram J. Harris died at the age of 88 at his home 6526
Northumberland St., Pittsburgh, Pa.
