Traveller."
paintings were done by
Edward Payson Washburn,
the son of the Rev. Cephas
Washington, Presbyterian
minister who came from
the East to take charge of
an Indian mission in Pope
county in 1830. The fam-
ily moved to Fort Smith,
Ark., in 1850.
years later. the artist
painted the "Traveller" at
Norristown, in Pope
county,
tune,
ler." is generally credited
to Col. Sandford C. Faulk-
ner, Kentucky native, who
came to Arkansas in l829,
and served in the Confed-
erate Army in the Civil
War. Faulkner county.
Arkansas was named for
him.
the "Traveller." still on
his horse, playing the
fiddie to the obvious de-
light of the host family.
Story has it that it was
his ability to turn the
tune" that won him hos-
pitality for the night from
the "natives."
