The WHITE HOUSE, Washington, D. C.
From the time of John Adams to the present the White House
has been the home of presidents. The cornerstone was laid in
1792, and it was constructed of Virginia freestone. During the
war of 1812 it was set afire by the British and only the walls were
left standing; when restored, the exterior was painted white to hide
the scars of the fire.
