On Culps Hill Looking West. Culps Hill formed the
Federal right. it was farthest from the Round Tops, but
bore its part in the defence of the Federal position on the
second day of battle. The battle was fought on the 1st.
2d, and 3d. of July, 1863. Twenty-nine States had troops
in the contending armies, Mary land having commands in
both: the Federals, 84,000 men with 327 pieces of artill-
ery; the confederates. 69,000 men and 250 heavy guns.
Total casualties 46,078; Federal losses 23,049, Confed-
erate losses 23,029.
