The oldest city in the United States and the Birthplace of American History. 1. Florida discovered in 1513 by Don Juan Ponce de Leon in search of the Fountain of Youth. 2. St. Augustine founded by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565. September 8th. 3. Shrine, Nuestra Senora de la Leche, where first Holy Mass celebrated by Menendez. 1565. 4. Present State Arsenal occupied as the Franciscan Monastery in 1577. 5. St. Augustine ransacked adn burned on May 28th, 1586 by Sir Francis Drake the English pirate. 6. Public market and standard system of weights and measure established in 1598. 7. Old Spanish Treasury built 1690 - 1695. 8. Castillo de San marcos started in 1672, completed 1756, with stood several English attacks. 9. City Gates are a remnant of the town wall built in the early 1700's. 10. Florida ceded to Great Briain 1763 for Cua. 11. Receded back to spain in 1783 in exchange for the Bahama Islands. 12. Roman Catholic Cathedral built in 1793 partially destroyed by fire in 1887. 13. Florida ceded to the United States in 1821 in settlement of border disputes. 14. Sea Wall built by United States 1837 - 1843.
