Our Boy Scouts - The King's Message Series 9996
The King is pleased to know that the Boy Scouts are holding their first parade. Please assure the boys that the King takes the greatest interest in them, and tell them that if he should call upon them in later life, the sense of patriotic responsibility and habits of discipline which they are now acquiring as boys will enable them to do their duty as men should any danger threaten the Empire. The Boy Scouts were founded in January 1908, by Lieut. General Sir Robert Baden-Powell, after an experimental camp held in August, 1907, on Brownsea Island, near Poole. The organization has spread throughout the United Kingdom, and similar organizations have been started in France, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, etc., and approximately throughout the world it may be said that there are 300,000 Boy Scouts. The movement is entirely self-supporting as far as each centre is concerned, and individual troops have to earn their own funds |
