Twelve million American Negroes are ask-
ing the same question these lads ask. The
story of democracy has come to their ears.
They want adequate education, a fair chance
in the labor market, homes that may be free
from disturbance, an opportunity to raise
their children for the best that life can give.
The story of democracy which they have
heard is full of such promise; the democracy
which they know lacks its very beginnings.
More and better schools with trained teach-
ers, churches in which to worship God,
preachers equipped for tasks of leadership,
the opportunity to enter broader fields of
service the application of Christian democ-
racy to them is the cry that is raised.

possible.
