The United States Constitution ... the Declaration of
Independence ... the Bill of Rights, indeed nearly every
document that Americans regard as a sacred treatise of
their freedom is held in safekeeping at the National
Archives in Washington, D.C. The National Archives
was created in 1934 for just this purpose — to house
documents and other resource materials that are of vital
importance to our nation. The materials contained in the
archives date from 1774 to the present. In addition to
historic documents, maps, sound recordings, photo-
graphs and motion pictures are housed in the temperature
and humidity controlled environment. The National Arc-
hives Building itself is a beautiful structure that was
designed by John Russell Pope to harmonize with the
other historic landmarks in Washington, D.C. Each year
thousands of people visit the Hall of Archives to see our
nation's most important documents. In 1984, the Na-
tional Archives celebrates its 50th anniversary with the
