Additional Details:
The United States Constitution ... the Declaration of Independence ... the Bill of Rights, indeed nearly every document that Americans regard as a sacred treatise of their freedom is held in safekeeping at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The National Archives was created in 1934 for just this purpose - to house documents and other resource materials that are of vital importance to our nation. The materials contained in the archives date from 1774 to the present. In addition to historic documents, maps, sound recordings, photographs and motion pictures are housed in the temperature and humidity controlled environment. The National Archives Building itself is a beautiful structure that was designed by John Russell Pope to harmonize with the other historic landmarks in Washington, D.C. Each year thousands of people visit the Hall of Archives to see our nation's most important documents. In 1984, the National Archives celebrates its 50th anniversary with the stamp featured on this Maximum Card
