First Issue Location: Washington, D.C. Until July 21, 1965, crime had always been solely the problem of the victim. However, on that date President Lyndon B. Johnson suggested that a new approach to crime would be much more effective and make crime prevention everyone's business. President Johnson believed that religious groups, and private and public establishments - as well as private citizens - should all participate in the crime prevention crusade. Recently, the National Crime Prevention Coalition has set out to make the public aware of this pressing issue which all too often is overlooked. The Advertising Council provides technical assistance for the campaign as a public service ... and McGruff, The Crime Dog, is certainly its greatest contribution. Since the start of the campaign, more than 140 million dollars have been donated ... and the results are noticeable: a survey showed that over fifty percent of the American public recognizes McGruff as The Crime Dog - a hopeful indication that more people are helping to "Take a bite out of crime."
