For thousands of years, health research consisted of little
more than the practice of magic. But, over the centuries
as man learned more about the human body . . . and
perfected methods of health research ... medicine be-
came a more scientific discipline. Today, through the
efforts of health researchers, medicine has become a
respected science that can offer hope of cure to mankind.
Indeed, because of the advancements made by health
research professionals, people around the world now
live longer and happier lives. Health research has pro-
vided the key to controlling diseases that once meant
certain death to anyone who contracted them. For exam-
ple, smallpox, polio, and yellow fever are no longer the
incurable diseases they once were . . . all because of
the dedicated work of health researchers. In 1984, the
United States Postal Service issued the stamp featured
on this Maximum Card to call national attention to the
great service America's health research professionals are
providing for mankind.
